Montessori Principles For Leadership And Staff Engagement

Apply for this course

NOTICE: this course is NOT eligible for CMDCP certification but can be used for CMDCP renewal

Course Description:

Leaders in care communities are seeking effective organizational approaches to learning, growth, and development. They believe changes to traditional, old-paradigm service and management practices are vital to remaining competitive in an industry that rewards staff attraction and retention. The Montessori-based approach, introduced and developed by , has been shown to increase resident engagement, independence, and quality of life. In addition, this approach has attracted motivated, talented, and dedicated staff at all levels. At the core of the Montessori-based approach are the values of respect, dignity, and equality for all human beings. When these values are embedded throughout an organization, it leads to true culture change for residents, management, and staff. Simply put, it is not enough to focus on person-centered resident care to produce culture change. In this presentation, an emerging organizational model for care communities will be presented. In organizations that have adopted this model, administrators, supervisors, and line staff are focused on (and responsible for) adopting and sustaining culture change for all residents and staff.

Examples will be presented from care communities which have been pursuing a comprehensive Montessori-based approach. These communities have been able to effectively market their residential services while competing for employees on culture rather than pay. They are moving toward a Deliberately Developmental Organization where annual evaluations are replaced (or at least supplemented) by a coaching/mentoring model of growth and encouragement for employees. Applying these techniques and approaches produce outcomes including increased employee morale and engagement, improved quality of care, increased census, increased staff retention, and reduced staff/resident injuries. Thus, a person-centered care approach applied to caregiving systems represents best practices and an outstanding business model.
